About Cricket Chirps and Temperature
This calculator estimates outdoor temperature from the number of cricket chirps heard during a 25-second count. It uses the common Celsius shortcut: divide the chirp count by 3, then add 4. The calculator also converts the Celsius estimate to Fahrenheit.
There are three ways to use it. Listen for Crickets asks for microphone permission and analyzes the sound locally for 25 seconds. The Chirp! button lets you count by tapping once for each chirp. Manual entry lets you type a count you already measured during exactly 25 seconds.
The automatic listening mode is experimental. It first prepares the microphone and measures background noise, then starts the 25-second counting period. It looks for short sound bursts, compares them with the recent background level, and applies duration and cooldown checks so one burst is not counted several times. Audio stays on your device and is not uploaded or permanently saved.
Beta diagnostics include broadband and high-frequency test modes, plus the current cricket detector. These are temporary tuning tools to show whether the microphone is receiving sound, whether that sound is reaching the analyzed frequency range, and why a possible chirp was counted or rejected.
Crickets are cold-blooded, so their body processes respond to surrounding temperature. In warmer air, the muscle reactions involved in chirping generally happen faster. In cooler air, chirping usually slows down.
For example, 48 chirps in 25 seconds gives 48 divided by 3, plus 4, or about 20 C. That is equivalent to 68 F.
This method is a natural estimate, not a precise thermometer. Different cricket species, nearby noise, wind, humidity, shelter, and whether more than one cricket is chirping can all affect the count.

How do cricket chirps indicate temperature?
Crickets are cold-blooded, and their chirp rate changes with surrounding temperature. Warmer conditions usually make chirps faster, while cooler conditions usually slow them down.
Why must I count for exactly 25 seconds?
The Celsius shortcut used here is based on a 25-second count. The calculator divides that count by 3 and adds 4, so a shorter or longer count would give the wrong estimate.
Is the cricket temperature estimate accurate?
It is only an estimate. It can be close in the right conditions, but it should not replace a real thermometer.
Does the formula work for every cricket species?
No. Different species can chirp at different rates, and some insects that sound like crickets may not follow the same pattern.
Can I enter the chirp count manually?

Does automatic listening upload audio?

Why might automatic listening count incorrectly?
The detector is experimental. Background sounds, several crickets, distance from the sound, phone microphone quality, and playback volume can all affect the count. You can edit the detected count manually.
What happens if more than one cricket is chirping?
The estimate can become less reliable. Try to count one clear cricket call rather than a mixture of overlapping chirps.
Why are my results different from a thermometer?
Species, background noise, humidity, wind, local shelter, and counting mistakes can all change the estimate. A thermometer is the better source for exact temperature.
